B.Pharm gets Upgrade: Key Changes as per PCI May 2025 Curriculum Draft

The Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) has released a draft of the revised B.Pharm curriculum in May 2025—marking its first significant update in over a decade. This new draft marks a significant modernization of B.Pharm education in India. With this transformation, B.Pharm education in India aims to become more flexible, industry-ready, and globally aligned, setting a new benchmark for pharmaceutical education in the country.

What’s New?

1. Specializations from 3rd Year
• Two tracks: Industrial Pharmacy or Clinical & Hospital Pharmacy
• Students will first undergo four semesters of foundational learning before choosing a their path from Semester 5 onwards tailored to their career goals.
2. Credit-Based System (170–172 credits)
• Courses now follow the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 model
• Includes credit transfer, integration with platforms like SWAYAM via the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) and exit options.
• Exit after 2 years gives a diploma; full degree after 4 years
3. Modern Topics Added
• Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, Robotics, Blockchain in Pharmacy to make students ready for the tech-driven future.
4. Skill & Value-Based Courses
• Skill Enhancement Courses (SECs): Communication, pharmacy management, innovation, etc.
• Value-Added Courses (VACs): Scientific writing, clinical data, mental wellness, etc.
• Ability Enhancement Courses (AECs): Drug discovery, entrepreneurship, AI in healthcare, etc.
5. New Evaluation Methods
• Includes OSCEs (Objective Structured Clinical Exams)
• More focus on case-based learning and real-world applications.

• Draft released in May 2025 for public feedback
• The PCI has opened the draft for public consultation
• PCI will finalize after feedback and central council approval
• Expected to be implemented from 2025–26 or 2026–27 session
• Faculty training is being planned across India
